What you will need to bring to class...

We require you to bring to class: Water, bowl, plenty of small training treats, poop bags, doggie mat, paper towel, 6ft. lead ( No Retractable leashes)and proper collar. (No shock or E-collars.) After your evaluation, a correct collar might be suggested. Harnesses are not suggested for training purposes. When starting visits you will switch to a 4ft. lead.

What happens after you graduate

Since we normally train indoors in one of our wonderful facilities, you and your dog will have already acclimated to the environment in which they will be working in. Once you graduate we offer placement in facilities we visit in the 3 counties. If we don't have a facility in your area please let us know, and together we can make it possible by contacting the director of the nearest facility to you, and on your behalf!

Congratulations you are now an AKC Novice Therapy Dog, and a Bonafide Therapy Dog team member!

We will now keep you informed of any, and all visits we make during the month.

You are always welcome to attend the fun, and be apart of any of the many events we are involved with to spread the word about the work we continue, and love to do. If there is an event in your area, just let us know so we can get involved in your community...

You are also entitled to join any of the ongoing classes in session to keep yourself, and your fur baby up to date on new training techniques or just as a refresher, and at no cost to you.

All that is required is your yearly membership, and insurance being up to date.

Our Evaluation Criteria

This is a brief overview of our Bonafide Therapy Dog Evaluation/Test.

1. Greeting: The testing check-In table will be your first stop where you and your dog are greeted.  We check for proper collar/harness.  Your dog will be pet by one of our evaluators.

2. Loose Leash Walking: Done both within the room and also entering/exiting a doorway.

3. Walking through a Crowd: Under control

4. Facility Scenarios: Approaches to pet your dog; a person walks by and drops something; a person runs past and is yelling.

5. Obedience: Sit/Stay; Down/Stay; and Recall.  Other items can be added as necessary.

6. Leave-It: One of the most import skills for a therapy dog.The dog and handler will walk past various food items on the floor. The dog must leave the item and not eat it.

7. Meet and Greet: (other dogs): You will approach another dog, stop and greet and then move past one another.  The dogs will not have any contact with each other.

8. Separation: Your dog will be handled by an evaluator while you move out of sight for 2 minutes.
